«The future is up for grabs. It belongs to any and all who will take the risk and accept the responsibility of consciously creating the future they want.»
Robert Anton Wilson
As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to discover new things about nature. To me, finding out how world works is the most enjoyable and captivating intellectual activity. However, the universe is infinite, and there was no time for me to gain proper knowledge of all subjects in every sphere of science, because human life is too short. Therefore, I decided to start my scientific journey by studying biology in order to find a cure for aging and buy time for myself to do other things. After studying bioengineering at Lomonosov Moscow State University for four years, I have become convinced that aging is humankind’s greatest challenge. We are taught to take aging for granted and accept age-related diseases and death as inevitable parts of existence. Although several breakthroughs in anti-aging science have been made in recent years, there is still no definite way to retard the aging process.
So what is the fastest way to find a solution to this problem? The answer is obvious – to focus on analyzing the data generated by millions of other people around the world. Biological data are being produced at a phenomenal rate, and the magic wand for understanding the information associated with biological processes is bioinformatics. Bioinformatics uses special tools to analyse the data and interpret the results in a biologically meaningful manner. We can now conduct global research on all the available data to uncover common principles of biological systems and unveil their new features. Recently, I got a job offer from Insilico Medicine, Inc. – a leading bioinformatics company specializing in aging and cancer research – and from now on I am going to fight aging with this talented scientific team.
Aging is a multifactorial process, so for a young scientist like me, it would be better to begin by specializing in one particular field. Which field should I choose? Since people often admire my unusually long hair, I decided that this distinctive feature of my appearance would be the clue to my dilemma and I should start out by studying hair aging. Actually, the appearance of hair plays an important role in people’s overall physical appearance and self-perception. Not everybody can embrace being bald, for example, most men who suffer from male pattern baldness often feel ashamed and inferior. I hope that soon we will succeed in fighting this emotionally devastating disorder, and baldness will be regarded as a choice of style and not a scourge of aging.
Right now, my goal is to revolutionize the beauty industry by introducing new effective hair care products discovered with the help of a bioinformatics approach. Stay tuned!
